Tudor Revival house and yard

The yard is one name for the grounds around a home. Some homes don't have yards, while others have acres of open land around them. The classic American suburban house has a yard of about one quarter to one half an acre with short, green grass and maybe a few trees, bushes or flowers. And for a real 50s classic, add a white picket fence.

In addition to varying in size, yards can have different kinds of ground cover. The boundaries may be delineated by a hedge, wall, line of trees, a driveway, change in ground cover or nothing. A middle-class yard may also include a garden, a shed or play area. For more expensive places, the yards may have pools, a gazebo or tennis court.
