A toaster is a small device for heating food or for cooking the outside, browning it or making it crispy.
Old fashioned toasters would hold only flat items like bread. Then they added a drawer to some, like a small broiler. Today's toaster ovens are more like small oven/broilers. They can sometimes be used instead of heading up the whole, full-sized oven.
Industrial toasters have a track. Multiple pieces follow the track around the heat source.
Like other heating or cooking devices, it's important that toasters be kept away from other flammable materials. Electric toasters should be kept away from water, especially when plugged in. Toasters can also be a fire hazard if too many crumbs are allowed to accumulate in them. And like with other appliances, the cords and plugs should occasionally be checked for fraying.
