Milk is a common drink. Although in some parts of the world it is mainly drunk by babies and small children and not by adults. Milk comes from mammals. Most commercially sold milk comes from cows. Milk can be found in many foods, especially dairy products.
Milk can be a good inducer for sleep, especially when warmed.
Milk and cookies are a classic afternoon snack.
Milk are a common ingredient in many foods such as bread, cheese, cake, cookies, yogurt, and ice cream.
Other milk related products: cream and butter
At least in the U.S., when the word "creme" is used, the food may not be a real dairy product. Food substitutes were used instead of separating cream from milk. So, this is one case where spelling is important.
Lactose intolerance and allergies[]
People who are lactose intolerant tend not to consume milk in case of unwanted side effects such as flatulence, stomach pains, nausea and diarrhea. Lactose intolerant people don't produce enough lactase in their body. This makes it difficult for their bodies to break down lactose into smaller molecules that can be absorbed into the blood stream. So, the undigested milk must pass out the body one way or another. There are some digestive aids which can help, so that lactose intolerant people can eat foods with lactose without as many side effects.
Alternatives for vegans and lactose intolerant people are:
- soy milk
- lactose-free milk
Some people have allergies to milk. This can change over time.
People who do not drink much milk can, over time, lose the ability to digest it.
