Hot spiced cider is basically what it sounds like, cider that has spices added and is then warmed to infuse those spices' flavors. It is also called mulled cider. Commonly used spices include cinnamon, mace, and allspice. Some people add fruits -- sliced apples, oranges, etc.
The amount of ingredients and warming time can vary widely and still turn out good.
|4 cups of apple juice or apple cider||1 stick or 1 tsp of cinnamon|
|1 tsp of mace or allspice or a spoonful of whole pieces|
|slices of orange, apple, lemon, limes||other spices such as star anise|
|rum||other fruit juices such as cherry, pear, plum|
- Add other ingredients to the juice.
- Warm slowly for at least 1/2 hour. It does not need to boil, although boiling will probably not harm anything. Longer, slow cooking is better.
- You can use a large pot, but if you have a crock pot available it's easier and you don't have to worry as much about scorching anything.
- Strain or scoop into mugs and serve.
I like using whole, dried spices rather than ground. Star anise adds a nice flavor and the shape looks good too! -- CocoaZen
