The term compact house is one of several terms to describe homes that were designed to be small or compact. This is often for purposes of efficiency or to be environmentally friendly. A compact house can sometimes be used as a secondary suite, that is, a slightly separate living space for extended family or guests (a guest cottage) on the grounds of a larger home.
Some places are experimenting with using micro-compact homes as a replacement for other housing, like dorms.
Other terms: micro-compact home, tiny house
