A chest is piece of furniture that usually serves as storage, often for clothes or bedding. It can also be used as a seat.

Some chests have a tray that makes an upper section for smaller or more frequently used items. Chests make have locks or places to attach a combination or padlock for security or privacy.

A chest of drawers is a different type of furniture. (See bureau).

A hope chest was traditionally a chest in which a young woman would keep clothing and household goods in preparation for her marriage and setting up her own household.
